Sanctuary and Stronghold: SGH at 200 The SGH Story: 1821 to 2021

About

Volume 1

A commemoration of the Bicentenary of Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Sanctuary and Stronghold pays tribute to the staff of SGH from past to present generations. The stories in this book honour the staff and the policy-makers: their can-do spirit, dedication, discipline and hard work, which give SGH its identity as the People’s Hospital. Attention has been paid to the context and history of the struggles in the early years, alongside considerations of present-day efforts to bring healthcare in Singapore to greater heights.

Volume 2

The 20 stories in this publication come from 1,200 minutes of interviews with 26 people whose lives are intertwined with that of SGH. Each interview commenced with the question, “How did your connection with SGH begin?”

For many, SGH is their first workplace. Memories go further back in time for those who had been students at the medical schools or at the School of Nursing. There were thus many moments of nostalgia as people, places and memorable experiences, long embedded inside hearts and minds, were recalled and shared.

The history of Singapore’s oldest healthcare institution comes alive through the personal narratives of these 26 representatives. There is humility and generosity of spirit, especially towards patients. There is dedication and discipline to do what is needed to improve things. These profiles offer reminders of how passion, courage and grit come from a profound sense of purpose.
