___

10 years ago—on 25 April 2015 at 11.56am—a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. The devastation from the temblor claimed close to 9,000 lives and left 22,000 others injured. In the aftermath of the earthquake, we remember its impact.

This photo-journalism project documents the stories of survivors—at the exact moment and place—when the earthquake struck. We travel back in time where a single event reverberates into the future.

A young mother saving two babies with her bare hands near the epicentre; a husband searching for his wife when a temple collapses; a priestess who felt uneasy that fateful morning; a Singaporean couple frantic to return home to save their unborn baby; a woman mountaineer narrowly escaping death at Everest Base Camp; the baby that survived, 22 hours under the rubble.

Description

Inside the book

Besides these stories, the book highlights the science behind earthquakes in a place like Nepal, nestled in the Himalayas—with a timeline and map of the most significant temblors in its history. The book also showcases Singaporeans who flew in immediately to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. More importantly, the book serves as a useful guide for anyone in an earthquake-prone zone, with tips on what to do before, during and after an earthquake.

A Nepal-Singapore connection

Singaporean photographer Zakaria Zainal, one of authors, remembers clearly when the earthquake struck that day. His personal experience of the temblor—interrupting his lunch appointment with famous Nepali editor and author Narayan Wagle—is the inspiration behind this book. Their destinies are forever intertwined because of this event as they unravel their own version of what happened that day.

Meanwhile writer Sahina Shrestha is no stranger to Singapore. She was selected for the prestigious Asia Journalism Fellowship in 2023 held in the Lion City. Both Zakaria and Sahina are earthquake survivors.

Nepal Bhukampa: Kaha thiyau? (Nepal Earthquake: Where were you?) documents ordinary Nepalis and their stories when the 2015 earthquake struck. United by the same natural disaster, their lives are transformed forever.

About the Authors

Sahina Shrestha remains convinced that stories are the best way to make a difference in society. She draws the greatest satisfaction from on-the-ground, close-up reporting on issues that matter, from major disasters that devastate communities, to issues of social justice, culture and heritage and development. Sahina’s decade-long experience includes helming Nepali Times’ online content and social media platforms. In 2023, she was selected for the prestigious Asia Journalism Fellowship held in Singapore. She is a Fulbright scholar and has a master’s in journalism from New York University.

Zakaria Zainal makes meaning of the world through his photographs. He is best known for the Singapore Gurkhas trilogy – visual books on the diasporic lives of this proud paramilitary tradition in the Lion City. His photographs and text interrogate space and memory vis-a-vis visual projects which include: the 2013 Little India riot; living histories of forgotten Singapore islanders; the aura of religion within the Covid-19 pandemic; and the declining Malay-Muslim mutual benefit organisations. His visual projects are collected by the National Museum of Singapore and exhibited internationally. He graduated from Hyper Island and NTU’s School of Communication.
