Lowinsky’s Diary: The Poetry and Prose of Patrick Low

About

Born Low Soh Chye, this irascible, irresistibly charming chap took on the name Patrick Low after shedding his youth. A political science graduate from the University of Singapore, he later obtained a scholarship to do his master’s at Yale. Patrick had a way with words, penning ditties and birthday notes to cherished friends and family members throughout his life.

A tireless correspondent and loving critic, his restless, fertile mind delved into matters big and small, past and present, local and international, and he readily dispensed his thoughts to one and all. The Forum page of The Straits Times printed several of his letters.

He would sign off with a variety of names, including his favoured nom de plume, Lowinsky. He wore on his sleeve his profound love for people and for his country and his social media entries had been widely shared within Singapore and overseas.

Patrick passed on in 2023 at the age of 79. This collection of his poetry and prose is lovingly put together by his wife, Maggie Ong.

Praise

For friends, this book takes them down memory lane. For strangers, this book reveals an unconventional life of a Singaporean who was not bound by all the rules which our government imposed on us. It also gives us glimpses of Singapore, pre and post independence. It is an interesting book.

Lowinsky’s book…a worthy read. Hopefully there will be more local writers like him penning thoughts and speaking up for the good of this nation and her people!
